SPATZ – Intragastric Balloon

During the last 25 years the Intragastric Balloon has shown to be the most effective non-invasive method to treat obesity.

More than 100,000 patients have achieved an average weight loss of more than 39 lbs in the first six months of treatment.

However, over the years, some deficiencies and limitations have been detected in the traditional intragastric balloon model:

ADJUSTABILITY AFTER PLACEMENT

The adjustable balloon is inserted into the stomach, through a simple endoscopy accompanied by a slight sedation. Once placed in the stomach the adjustable balloon is filled with physiological saline. By occupying a large part of the gastric cavity, the balloon generates a feeling of satiety for the patient, who feels satisfied by eating less food.

Studies show that 80% of the final weight is lost during the first 3-4 months of treatment with the old balloon. Afterwards, the sensation of satiety decreases and the appetite recovers; making it more difficult to continue losing weight.

The key to success lies in adjustability.

Medical experience shows us that, at the end of the treatment with the old balloon, the patient will implant another, the weight loss obtained with the second balloon would be minimal. The size of the second device is the same and as the stomach is already used to it, it does not generate satiety.

With the BAS, we gradually increase the volume and size of the balloon throughout the treatment, so that the stomach doesn’t get used to it and the feeling of fullness is constant until the end of the treatment.

Thus providing the ball with a second life and the final weight loss increases by more than double that of the old ball.

MORE TOLERANCE AND LESS REJECTIONS

The BAS is filled with a saline solution that occupies approximately a third of the stomach volume. Enough to cause a great feeling of fullness and minimize the initial discomfort of the treatment.

With the adjustable balloon, if a patient feels significant discomfort after placement and does not adapt well, we can readjust their size and avoid premature removal of the balloon.
